Office Situation: Should I paint the oar?

Wednesday, January 25, 2012

Remember this inspiration I drew up for my office?

Except, instead of a branch I wanted to get an oar (i.e. paddle). Then I found one for $15 at a thrift store! Enter my...

I found a perfect spot to hang it as I've been decorating my office. I'm thinking the space between my curtains and book shelf.

But here's my question for YOU.

I can't figure out if I want to keep the wood color (and re-stain it)... or go for a modern look and paint it white?

Keep in mind that the white on the oar is magic photoshop. It isn't white yet, but that gives you an idea of what it could look like. My walls are cream so the white would stand out. Thoughts? Wood or white?

  1. I like the wood. But if you did white, it might look cool for it to be a distressed white.

    1. See, I like the wood too (it would match the bookshelf) -- but it's in a pretty poor condition so I would really have to clean it up. I feel like the white would maybe "refine" it a little more. Distressed white -- that's a good middle ground :) Thanks!

  2. I think that a distressed white would look really good because you have the wood storage on the wall right next to where it will be.

    1. My thoughts exactly! I was leaning to white, but wanted to see what others thought in case I was missing something with the wood. I've never distressed anything before, so this might be interesting.

  3. Wood - the paddle would keep it's identity that way and not look like a decor prop. It also goes nicely with your bookshelf and keeps that color of wood as a theme color and not an isolated piece in and of the bookshelf. How bad a shape is the paddle in? I think the used condition gives it character, but would understand if you needed to do some sanding and a coat of something on it. Have you thought about paining some banded stripes on the handle or a design on the paddle? My three cents. ;-)

    1. SETH!! You had to go and change things up! STRIPES!?! Genius. Ugh. Why did you just do this to me? The wood, however, IS in pretty bad condition near the paddle =\ As in dark wood stains =\ So how can I cover that up?

I can totally picture the paddle in wood and white banded stripes on the handle..!!!

  4. I say teal(even though it wasn't an option).

  5. Oo! White, with wood stripes on the handle, or a taped off letter that would be wood.
