Pretty Little Things ... on my nose

Thursday, June 28, 2012

Oh man... some of the things I'm obsessed with on Pinterest usually entail office decor, design inspiration, or fashion.

The truth is, I don't typically pin impulsively - I usually have a reason I'm pinning which then leads me down a rabbit hole of inspiration.  Can I get an amen?  And this time it was trying to find an outfit for myself.  A great friend and film photographer will be visiting Phoenix next month to take photos of Jose and I (eeeep!).  So now I'm on the other side wondering -- what do I wear?!  Which of course led to...

See the little arrow on the black and white photo?  Well... funny story.  One of my birthday gifts from Jose was to get a new nose ring -- you know, the kind where the stone won't keep falling off the little stud.  WELL.  I confessed that I always wanted a ring (see picture above).  Enter face of hesitation on Jose.  I let the thought linger and we headed into the store.  We pick out a pretty little stud and then.... my eyes linger to the rings.  And I SEE IT.  A ROSE GOLD delicate little ring.  And then we see the price tag.  Woah.

Clearly a nose ring is not one of those let me just "try it on" kind of things.  Once it touches your nose, it's yours.  And for that price, it was too risky.  So then the man pulled out the sterling silver ones that were 1/4th of the price and 1/4 the cuteness.  He told me "look, for $16... you might as well purchase it and see if it suits you.  If you love it, then come back for the gold one and you at least have the peace of mind."  This sales guy.  He's good.  I look at Jose and I give him that smile.  That smile of ... "babbyyyyy, I think I'm going to like thiiiiis."  Hahaha.  So we go to the back, size my stud, remove it, then move on to the nose ring.  He hooks it in and says "well, take a look!"  Woah.  That's different.  I definitely had to get used to it for a second but I admit, I was feeling adventurous.  Turns out that being able to wear a nose ring like this is all dependent on where the actual piercing is on your nose.  And LET ME TELL YOU -- the story of HOW I got my nose pierced is another blogpost alone!! Prom, under 18, at hair shop... oh my gosh, the funny things I can tell about my life.

I digress.  Point being that apparently I have a suited nose and piercing for the ring!!  The man said that a majority of people who come in wanting it don't even have the option because the ring will not sit on the nostril correctly.  Woop woop!  Then yesterday Jose looked at me, nodded his head, smiled and said "I'm getting used it."  So, in just a few hours I will be returning to switch out the stainless steel for the rose gold one!!  So excited :) :)  The good thing is that I will always have the option to swap it out with my little stud if I feel it's not appropriate for a certain event.  But I'm just so excited because I think the rose gold will be the perfect mix of feminine and funky (which funky femme = Ale!).

So in case you're wondering what's going on in my head, just follow me on Pinterest.  Consider it your visual diagram :)

Friday Links

Friday, April 16, 2010

This was taken in Arizona... where I'm heading to this weekend!

I can explain this. This absence... my behavior. In SIX days, it will be ONE M.O.N.T.H until I get married!

Married.

Like.. I wake up, get my hair done, and walk down the isle to commit to my fiance for the rest of my life. And dance. Lots of dancing. And pictures too :) Though I still haven't decided on a hair stylist (craaaap!!).

So you can see that I've been running around like a mad woman. Mainly getting ready to visit Arizona tomorrow, so the wedding planning itself has been frolicking in la-la land, ready to slap me when I realize what I've neglected.

To forgive me, I'm leaving you with my favorite links from the web that I'm pretty sure you will like too. Then you will forgive me, and I will tell you all about Arizona when I get back. Hopefully with an awesome tan. Or sunburn. You know, the order doesn't matter.

Mmmmmexican Sangria anyone?

My friend Meghan featured my Etsy site! Which now has the Art That Helps work up! 20 of us collaborated to create some art for YOU, where 100% of the proceed will go to Haiti. Promise Tangeman tells you all about it.

This girl's grandfather died, but she is honoring him by creating the CUTEST dresses and tops out of the clothes he left behind! I'm telling you -- PURCHASE worthy creations.

Wouldn't mind seeing this on my bedside table

Some inspiration for my upcoming move. You can bring NY to your home... even in the dessert ;)

I can see myself attempting to make this bedside cabinet

Oh my word. Libraries.

Dummy. I definitely thought the before was the after.

Drag queens meet Easter? Or just really creative people...

What a CUTE (and free!) stationary set.

Goodness, I love red.

LOL. These colorful piggies crack me up. Via ffffound.

He just wants to be a single lady.

If I was starting from scratch (meaning JUST recently engaged), I would be ALL over this wedding inspiration.

I got this AMAZING robe for my bridal shower (which was ridiculously awesome), and now I'm obsessing over this Etsy seller. Particularly her dresses.

Happy Friday everyone! Wish me luck finding our home this weekend (eep!!). And BTW -- I have to say that I got one of the most incredible gifts from my friends this week!! I can't do it justice by one line -- it needs its own post. That will be up next week. Ciao!

Groom's Goodies & Random Thoughts

Tuesday, February 16, 2010

Maaaan, I love really great fabrics. I think this groom really nailed the whole "barn-Americana-retro" look.

By the way, during lunch I will finish working on the Save-the-Date tutorial. I have 1/3 of the draft typed out and can hopefully have it done by later today.

I don't want to open a can of worms (and I may hear a can opening right now...), but I keep chewing on the idea of the lack of diversity in the wedding blog world. I talked to my fiance about it yesterday and told him how an interracial couple was featured on A Practical Wedding and that there was a HUGE response of "finally!" or "yay!"

Now mind you, I am not here to discuss the "race" aspect (yet) -- but more of the business aspect. You know what gets you featured on the "big" wedding blogs? Your photography. You can have amazing little details, DIY, gorgeous dress, etc. -- but if your photography stinks, it will not represent your wedding well. Same with simple weddings -- you can have VERY little but gorgeously captured details -- and BAM! You are on. Obviously, the more unique (and more personalized details) -- the more likely you'll get featured. But that photography needs to be on point!

Speaking directly about the lack of African American/mixed couples featured on wedding blogs -- is it because there is less interest placed in photography? Because the bride can only do so much -- the photographer is the one "submitting" to these wedding blogs. Or are they submitting but not being published? I completely understand the disappointment because you can't necessarily "relate" to everything. I'm Latina and I'm not exactly represented either, BUT I have a "design" and "photography" mentality, so I relate more on the design rather than the personal aspect. Even then though, it's overwhelming because everything is so "perfect" and "ruffled" and "soft" and aaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhh.

I wish I could hear everyone's opinion and thoughts -- but I have a feeling it might be too sensitive? What do you think? Cause seriously.... consider the photography business that is pretty much "directing/driving" the wedding blog world/business.

Proof takes the cake

Tuesday, February 2, 2010

And this, ladies & gents, is proof that one CAN have a beautiful (simple), white wedding cake -- adorned with some beautiful flowers. AND -- magic photography.

Because you can't deny that the photography just made you drool a little bit more than the actual cake... :)

Cause I love pretty pictures

Friday, January 15, 2010

via One Love Photo

I have some fun stuff to post for the upcoming weeks!!

1) My horrible wedding cake experience

2) MY SAVE THE DATES! I know not many of my friends have photoshop, but in case anyone out there does -- I'm actually going to tell you EXACTLY how I made mine! This way, if you have photoshop... you can experiment with what I did and make your own invites (for babyshowers, parties, birthdays, weddings, etc.).

3) Groom goodies

4) CONVINCE my fiance to be a guest blogger (yeaaaa!!! ;)

But in the mean time... take a break with some of these links!

+ There are 2 looks I am "collecting" for a surprise (you will find out eventually). This one and this one.. now, to find the clothes at a thrift store or make a modern twist with my own..

+ DIY snowglobes!! via Creative Odds n' Ends

+On second thought, screw the cake and let's bring these!

+What are your thoughts on splits? I just don't look very good in them, but others pull it off... do you?

+You're not going to believe this... after much consideration, I am HONESTLY going to attempt making one of these. And YES, you will be updated on my progress. I already have some "beginning the ridiculous project" pictures!

+Speaking of DIY -- how about a simple bow? What if I attached a clip and made my ring bearer's bow tie like this?

+Then I could use the fabric I am obsessed with!!

+Now this is a gorgeous alternative to wedding hair pieces. Stunning!

+Interesting read... what if you didn't love your wedding? Would you admit it?

+Or "You'll seeeee" via A Practical Wedding

+Ok, this was WAY more fun than I expected. This Freud like character asks you 4 q's, jots his notes, and reveals your "type." Apparently I am "architype" which was a font I did not like and don't think reflects me. But it was still fun -- I laughed at the "discipline" question. What is your type? Via How About Orange

Going on a date tonight with Jose! We're going ice skating at Centennial Park. I'm pretty bad at it, so I hope I don't come back with too many bruises on my butt :)

Alive By It

Thursday, January 14, 2010

I have loved this quote since the day I read it:

"Photographers may or may not make a living by photography, but they are alive by it." - Robert Adams

Then, I came across these stories from Zack Arias' blog. Unbelievable. My fiance told me that my photography should not define me. That at one point in time, if God asked me to drop my camera and all of my photography -- I could do it. Can I? Could I pursue something else in life that keeps me up at night? That makes me anxious and excited to do?

If you aren't reading all of them, at least read this one:

I write this from the coffee shop where I was with Samantha the day she told me she quit her job. Her corporate job. Her well paying corporate job. She told me she couldn’t do it anymore or perhaps more accurately — she couldn’t not do photography anymore. Samantha had enjoyed her life behind a camera for decades. Arguably since the day she was born. Now, she told me, she was going to do it.

She was very clear about this.

I thought she had lost her freaking mind.

Before and since this day at the coffee shop I have watched friends and strangers alike admire Samantha’s work. But, since that day I have seen what so many of her admirers do not – the incomprehensible sacrifices she makes to do it.

I have seen her sell her furniture, her possessions, her car, her bed. I have watched her not go out. Not get another drink. I have watched her knowing that she knows, that corporate job, that stable paycheck – are all a phone call away. In the times where I feel she might just put everything on Craig’s List I have tried mentioning this to her. I mention the 401K, the health insurance, the stability, the stress free lifestyle, the SALARY.

But, Samantha – just puts more things on Craig’s List.

Recently, her house went up there.

This is Samantha.

Samantha is true. True to herself. True to others. True to her art. It is through the camera that Samantha shows the world her (and other’s) truth and I feel there is no better representation of this truth and this honesty with which she lives than with her — Project. A project that records the last moments of living. A project in which she takes photographs of those in hospice, those who have been diagnosed as terminally ill, and those who, at times, have only hours remaining in their lives.

When she told me about this project it seemed painful, morbid, desperately awkward. Then she told me the story of seeing her mother in the hospital. When her mother was in the hospital undergoing chemotherapy for lung cancer Samantha went home to see her. When she walked in the hospital, she saw her mother lying in bed. Her mother was bald. She had tubes sticking out of her. Samantha burst into tears. Her mother looked at her – and smiled. In this moment Samantha understood sickness and death are scariest for those who watch it. It was this moment that inspired the —- Project.
Samantha does the —- Project to bring social awareness to end of life care. She does it because she sees profound beauty and peace where most would only see death. She does it because she believes in living. Because she believes in life. She does it because she believes there is as much life in the first breath as there is in the last. She does it because she believes in each moment of life and because she wants more than anything to record the beauty of these moments.

Samantha will not accept money for this project and as such finances are tight. She is not able to be with her family in Italy for the holidays. I would love nothing more than to give Samantha something to open on Christmas that would not only support her as a photographer but would celebrate how Samantha lives her life and how she unabashedly celebrates, in all of its stages, the lives of so many others.

Her photography does not define her. Her passion for celebrating life, her challenges and victories, and finding beauty define her.

So I propose to you to figure out what defines you. Because if one day you are forced to put your camera away (or whatever it is that is with you always, any piece of technology), you will need that to keep you alive. I am alive by photography, but it does not keep me alive.

Veil Help!

Tuesday, January 12, 2010

Remember I was thinking about this for my veil? (Keep in mind, I plan on adding a flower similar to this)

Well now she came out with this one and I think I am in love!! It's a little more expensive, but that's because it's not just the fabric. This would change my plans of putting a flower in my hair since the veil has the embroidered flowers. However, I feel more attracted to the volume of this veil...

What do you think?!?! Please vote!! The 1st or 2nd?!

An Alice in Wonderland Centerpiece

Tuesday, November 10, 2009

Halloween has come and gone, but I have not forgotten about your curiosity in the "Alice in Wonderland" series! We will start with the centerpiece that my fiance and I made (and later I will feature the rest of the table + shoot + photobooth!). We wanted it to be interactive, but inexpensive (I was already spending enough on candy and prizes!). Jose & I came up with a marshmallow tree! Perfect for the hot chocolate I would be serving in the tea pots since, after all, it was a Mad Hatter Tea Party ;)

Materials:
1- Spray paint (found at Michaels)
1- Styrofoam cone (found at Michaels)
1- Set of branches (found at Michaels)
1- Bag of marshmallows
1- Newspaper
1- Large vase
1- Reel of fishing wire
2- sheets of tissue paper

(ignore the frame... that's for my wedding centerpiece ;)

Then you take your large vase, stick some tissue paper at the bottom to support the cone. Place the cone inside the large vase. Then just start sticking the branches from the bottom up! I broke some of them in half to create varying lengths.

Then I added a flower on the very top of the cone. Also, for Halloween enjoyment, I added EDIBLE rocks (chocolates!) that Jasmine bought from Walmart to surround the vase!

Last, and the most tedious, you take some fishing string, tie it around the marshmallow, then tie it to a branch. Repeat 9,10,11,12, .... times!

And viola!

A Mad Hatter Halloween :) Stay tuned for more of the table decor and other goodies!
