Day 88: Confidence

Monday, May 3, 2010

Am I in over my head? I think this has been the longest that I've waited to post but after posting the last one, I have managed to: clean out my place in Atlanta, finished packing, drove to Texas, caught up on sleep this weekend, went to an immigration rally, and today was a wedding "shopping" day with my Aunts.

Tomorrow I am meeting with someone about hair stuff, driving to Houston, tasting cake, and going to bed to wake up early for my first wedding hair trial. I'm so sleepy right now but I couldn't wait any longer to post.

THE 100 DAYS IS ALMOST HERE!! If you have any pics to contribute, I urge you to send them this week. I'm going to be so busy these next few weeks seeing how I am down to less than 3 weeks until my wedding !!!!!!

I have 2 posts... a guest post and one from me :)

From our guest Tanya Klimova:
"It's just a point-and-shoot photo made to show off my new haircut, but I ended up really liking it. To me, it's a picture of strength. My femininity is strength. I am strong enough to carry and bear a child, and strong enough to care for her through tough teething days and sleepless nights. I am strong enough to take care of my house, too -- see the ironing board behind us. I'm my daughter's security object, and I am her strength; you can see how secure and comfortable she feels with me."

I absolutely love a mother's confidence. Tanya, I don't doubt you have uplifted women with your words. Yes, she is definitely rocking that hair cut and yes, that baby has some GORGEOUS blue eyes!

This last photo is one I took because flowers, clearly don't last forever, and I wanted to remember these. The sad thing is that plants under my care don't last at all, really. Molly, the little girl who lives in front of me, left these on my car one day and I thought they were so pretty. She is so sweet and after getting to know her mother, she definitely gets it from her.

Goodbye Atlanta. I'll miss you and your greenery, sweet tea, sweet people, random weather, fast highways, huuuuuuuuuuuge trees, DECATUR, culture, the Bert Show, my school, and all of the relationships I have made there.

Day 83: Batter the Chocolate

Wednesday, April 28, 2010

Sometimes I can't stop. I question whether I should forget about the oven and just eat the entire batter myself. Warning: Don't ever bake a cake hungry. Will that stop you from licking/eating/inhaling the batter? No, but at least you won't end up consuming about 2 cups worth of it. You might be strong enough to stop at one.

Doesn't that have raw ingredients?!
I look at Jose with a furrowed brow "Such as..?" The EGGS! They're not cooked.

We're not talking about meat here. I mean, plus, don't athletes stick 2 raw eggs in their protein shake or sometimes just drink it down without anything else?? I'm here to tell you that if you ever questioned the "raw" ingredients: I survived. And not just "I licked the spoon" survived... I'm talking I looked liked a dirty, starving child who lacked coordination in her hands to eat the batter.

That's about how happy I was.

And if THAT is not enough -- I'm coordinating with my (returning) guest contributor Brandy Wade for THIS interpretation of chocolate:

"I think of how my Mother and I would fight battles of will then form our own special peace treaties over chocolate ice cream. It brings to mind sweltering summers back in Texas where I would sneak a fudge-cicle to cool off. It makes me think of sad times; of death and sorrow that were assuaged by hugs, tears, and happy memories over a chocolate cake. It makes me think of the happy times; hot chocolate and decorating the Christmas tree and the chocolate pie I would bring to family events.

Chocolate also makes me think of different women who have effected my life since they all have their own similarities to chocolate. Some were silky sweet like milk chocolate. Others were bitter like bakers chocolate. Others carried with them shadows and darkness but the capacity for great kindness, just as dark chocolate is slightly smoky and at the same time rich and sweet.

The picture I have chosen to represent chocolate is of a tiny chocolate cake I made out of scraps from a birthday cake for a friend. It is chocolate cake with a chocolate mousse filling. It was very tasty.
---

Don't you just LOVE her metaphors between chocolate and women?! Brilliant. What a BEAUTIFUL interpretation of feminine Brandy. You never cease to impress me with your words. Unless you send me a cake that looks like that. But then I would just be greedy and indulgent. Oh wait, it's chocolate -- completely okay.

Day 77: Flowers

Thursday, April 22, 2010

Today I am honored to feature our guest post from Paulette Waltz. Though I did not get to know Paulette too much at Emory, we have stayed in touch via Facebook. It's a shame she graduated so soon because we are alike in so many ways. Our love of photography, community, activism, and even dance.

Her words so simple, and her photo so impacting: Flowers ... "They are delicate. Subtle. Colorful. Fragrant. Alive. Vibrant. Powerful. Soft. Sexy. Feminine."

You will be blown away by the work she has produced, traveling the world. There are two more images I will feature of hers, so I know you'll be looking forward to that! Make sure you check out her work -- simply incredible.

p.s. Sorry for the delayed post! I got back late last night and had to finish packing because Jose's parents are coming tomorrow to pick up my stuff. Bear with me in these next few weeks as I venture to move out, get married, travel Spain, and move to Arizona!

Day 73: Back to Motherhood

Monday, April 19, 2010

Hello from Arizona!!

Goodness it is HOT. I'm from Texas, and Atlanta gets pretty bad too, but it was already at 94 degrees yesterday and all I could think was "This is not the worst?" The time difference has been crazy. Our flight got in at 10:30 p.m. Arizona time, but it was actually 1:30 a.m. in Atlanta! The worst part is by the time we made it to our hotel to go to sleep it was close to 3 a.m. Atlanta time!

I won't go into the details of our "home" search yet -- but it's been pretty challenging. Fortunately, when I got online to check my e-mail, I had about 3 guest posts!! So thank you to those who are submitting -- you are SUCH a huge help. I'll be featuring one of them today :)

This one is from another mother, Stacy Warmack. She took me up on my daily challenge and I love it! I love when people push themselves, especially when it's something outside of their comfort zone. She said: "I have a son approximately the same age as Alexander. Here are some photos of my connection with him. As you mentioned in your post, this connection is very consuming, and it's about all that I seem to have pictures of. The first one: Ian is two months old. He and I are snuggling in the morning, and he is shown next to where he had been for so many months. The second one, we're on one of our first long walks as I discover that I can easily feed him wherever I need to."

Thank you Stacy :) And since we're talking about babies and I'm a fan of them.. here's a blurry but hilarious one of Alexander from the Easter shoot:

He is too good at that eyebrow raise. I got it a lot! What the heck is she doing on the grass with that big, black, box thing? [eyebrow raise]. Mom. Inspect this please.

Haha. If I don't melt away tomorrow, then I think I should be able to post before heading out to Atlanta. Night! :)

Day 68: Your Other Soul

Thursday, April 15, 2010

Today's post is from my session with Caitlin and her family. I took pictures of Alexander as a newborn and now I get to photograph him as an almost-1-year-old! Yes, almost, because on his actual birthday, this girl will be in Arizona. Dessert -- here I come!

But let me just throw out there, Alexander must have had something up his sleeve. He practiced. Because when I brought that camera out, he was practically flirting!

I'll talk more about the shoot when I post the full set. For now I want to focus on being a mother as my interpretation of "feminine" for today. The reason I call it "your other soul" is because watching how mothers post pictures of their children on facebook, the way they talk about them, and their expressions when I talk to them in person -- it's incredible. Their babies are literally their other soul -- or a piece of it.

I adore Alexander's excited face here. There's so many others that show this relationship between them even more, but I had to share this one first because I love how happy he looks! In fact, Alexander was pretty excited in a lot of the pictures. Don't you just want to catch him?! Maybe it's just my crazy obsession over babies, but I want to catch him, squoosh him (softly!), and kiss his little cheeks.

Anyway, I love motherhood. I have so many young friends with babies, and they talk about them with this admiring passion. The kind where chewing your toes, licking the mirror, brushing your teeth, and touching your poop is a new revelation of life. A combination of annoyance, humor, and a ridiculous amount of love. I know my baby will steal my heart when (s)he is in my tummy -- along with my sleep and waist line. Speaking of, my best friend is pregnant and she's having a boy :) So to all the mothers and soon-to-be-mothers -- this one is for you. Because I can't think of anyone else who finds immense happiness in little chubby finger prints.

Day 67: Art That Helps

Wednesday, April 14, 2010

It's READY!!!

From Promise:"20 artists from around the country all created their depiction of the words and phrases: Art for the greater good, Haiti, helping, serving, creativity, love wins, people, compassion, humble, humility all while using only 4 specific colors. After all submissions were received I compiled all of the artwork together in a collage style to be sold in all of our Etsy shops. %100 of the profit of all the sales goes towards the Haiti relief fund through A beautiful idea and World Vision."

Back in March, I shared how I created my contribution, so make sure to check that out if you haven't.

You guys, Promise freakin' KILLED it!! The collage art pieces she made with our individual work came out AMAZING!!

What can YOU do? You can purchase from my shop one of the pieces OR from any of the other contributors. You can find something as low as $6 up to $35. My Etsy shop is Eideticandy. Thanks for the love!! Now go read about everyone... riiiiiiight NOW! Go!

Oh wait! If you have any other ideas of how you'd like to see these printed, just let me know. Seriously! I have all the HI RES files so I'd love to create other fun stuff with it. Yup, cause... love wins ;)

Day 66: Wishing & Worrying

Tuesday, April 13, 2010

Today we have a guest post! It is from Brianna Kilgore. Can I say how proud I am of her? I personally know what a struggle and PAIN it is to post on your blog everyday. To actually push yourself to be consistent, and to put yourself out there. Sometimes you get feedback, and sometimes you don't. It's hard to stay motivated when you don't receive feedback, but you have to remind yourself that you're doing this for YOUR improvement. Focus on learning and growing, and the feedback will come in time. Brianna has made that step to commit to her photography and I'm excited to watch her work transform. That's what I love about blogging... you can look back on your first set of pictures and actually see your growth. This is why I think posting your photos is so important!

Anyyyyway, on to the photo!

From Brianna: "This picture represents how I've been feeling lately. 6 months ago I was let go from my job and decided to pursue photography as more than a hobby. With the added free time I've acquired I've been shooting and learning more about my camera and the photography business. But I've also been worrying about the future. Worrying about how I'm going to pay my rent this month. Am I going to be able to afford that hard drive I've been eyeing on the B&H website? Will I ever be a professional photographer? As women I feel that we are always worrying about the future. About future jobs, about future love interests, about how we are going to feed our families. What gets me through the day is cherishing the time I have to hone my skill and finding alot of free things to do! lol!

I love the urban feel of the photo. From my own perspective, Brianna's photos have a very edgy and urban look to them. Or I might just bias them that way since she's from NY :P What would you classify them as Bri?

Thank you chica for your submission!! Let's keep trekking on this journey and look back a year from now to this post. I believe you'll see more dessert pictures from me ;)

Day 65: Finding Your Confidence

Monday, April 12, 2010

How do y'all put up with me? I'm pretty scatter brained. I didn't even finish the Carnival shoot because I skipped Friday & Saturday. Then I got all excited about the MohkaLIFE shoot that I went ahead and posted that one on Sunday.

BUT, as promised, I will show you some behind the scenes into the process of the "blue" photo.

This particular session was the last of the day. Medhini was tired and the poor girl endured a full day of direction, requests, and worst of all -- dressing up! Energy was getting low and her face was beginning to show it. I had to find inspiration somewhere. We (Nagib & Nadia) began to throw out ideas and suggestions, but they weren't working. Finally, we knew what would rouse an emotion out of her: "Medhini, why don't you portray how you feel about this shoot? How much you dislike being made up?" Clearly this did not mean portray "anger," but it allowed her to be playful without feeling self conscious about what might look 'fashion-y' or sexy or stylish.

And then there's the addition of props, which in my case is the fabric she's playing with. The more we goofed around, the more expressive her face became. It went from goofy, to playful, to captivating.

We started with just throwing this up in the air:

Then we thought, screw it

Who needs to look fashion-y?!

Which lead to this (see the confidence growing?)

To this

And then you know what this one lead to:

Yep. The final photo. And she clearly wasn't being goofy. The difference? Her confidence. She wasn't connecting with fake scenarios. Allowing her to express something so playful enabled her to feel more comfortable and less pressured to get an amazing photo. I titled this post "finding your confidence" because all photography aside, we come across this scenario in life plenty of times. I struggle with this all the time as a photographer, partner, and individual. So while the model in front of me was finding inspiration, there was a small part of me that was doing the same.

Medhini is beautiful, but she is a student and not a model. I have learned so much working with MohkaLIFE, and it has absolutely tested me. I'm hungry for more and am so anxious to keep growing. And every once in a while, my camera will love me back ;)

I'll miss you Atlanta! Here's to my last few weeks left here...

Day 64: Babies & Beauties

Sunday, April 11, 2010

Aaahhh! I'm sorry! Friday and Saturday just snuck away from me, BUT to make up for it, I have really exciting things to share!!

First, we have a guest post from Meghan McFarlin. She is a new owner of a Nikon SLR and starting her photography adventures. I'm so proud of her because upon getting her camera she is learning it MANUALLY!! Major props to her because it is extremely challenging to push yourself into manual mode when you first take hold of an SLR. It actually took me a long while to stay on manual when I got my first Canon SLR (rebel xti!). I remember that I would try to learn it, but when I was around family there was SO much going on and kids were running all over, that I switched to AP mode to keep up. Eventually, I reached the point where I could stay on manual, despite my chaotic surroundings. So to those struggling with this, keep pushing -- I promise you'll get there eventually! Just keep shooting.

Now, on to her photo!

From Meghan: "This is my niece, Ella, at three weeks old. The focus is on accessories. Walk into any children's store, and you will find way more accessories for little girls than for boys. From birth, females are accessorized in a way in which boys just can't compete. From accents in their hair to toe-nail polish, women of all ages have men beat for adding a touch of personality to their outfits via accessories."

Haha. This is SO true about accessories. Shame is that I know I'll be that mother to my daughter :P Thank you Meghan!

Now, to some other exciting news. The new MohkaLIFE Who's Who is up!! And I have to say this ranks up there as one of my favorite photos. For those of you who know me, you know I've been dyyyying to do a cultural shoot with someone of Indian descent. I absolutely LOVE, love, LOVE the colors, richness in detail, and the fabrics! Aaaahhh. Now my next photography mission: An Indian Wedding!! Come on people, help me make this happen :)

And here, is the photo:

Medhini Kumar. Isn't she beautiful?! The hilarious thing is that she is a complete tomboy and hates dressing up. Now that the article is actually up, I can show you some behind the scene bloopers that resulted into this photo. Check out the spread for the rest of the pictures! Let me know what you think! I love feedback -- and that includes critiques.

Okay, okay... I'll give you an idea of what we were up to:

Day 60: The Dancer

Wednesday, April 7, 2010

Wow!! Already on 60 :) :)

This time, I'm in front of the camera. My character is a dancer in the carnival, but can also read people's future via tattoos (Heroes anyone?). I bought this hat at a vintage store and I am also wearing a vintage slip dress. The pearls on my face are actually a sticker-decor from Hobby Lobby.

My inspiration behind the editing was to give it a slightly desaturated found-this-old-photo at a thrift store feel, but still keeping the darks rich like the photo was actually taken care of, despite its age.

If I had to truly personify this character, I would say she is new to the carnival. She has hesitations, and a little fear, but that doesn't undermine her skill at interpreting the future. She prefers solitude, dancing in an empty room, and loves to wear accessories.

At least that's what my expression feels like...

Day 59: Circus Act

Tuesday, April 6, 2010

Um, okay, let's not lie. I can't tie this in with anything feminine -- but you'll forgive me, right? Or you can send me one ;)

I looove the fabric we chose for our mini-tent, mainly because of the color against the starching white.

I don't know what to say except that Jasmine will COMMIT to a theme! That's why I love photographing her! I mean, just imagine how much work it was to put on that white make-up AND taking it off! There some scary ones too. Like I said, these were a carnival theme, so of course you need a ring leader.

Day 58: Mystery

Monday, April 5, 2010

And we continue with the carnival theme! These two are pictures where Jasmine and I interpreted a gypsy. We bought some black lace fabric at Hobby Lobby and played around. She has such nicely angled hair and positions her face in really interesting ways, so I had a number of close ups and different perspectives of this look. They felt so feminine to me that I wanted to share the rest with you this week for the theme.

Stay tuned for the rest this week! :)

Day 57: Playing Dress Up

Sunday, April 4, 2010

God only knows WHY I have waited this long to post these. Tonight, I finally went through the (literally) HUNDREDS of pictures and narrowed them down. I still have too many to post here, but I have enough for at least a week's share! :)

Jasmine Vidal (my fiance's sister) is the epitome of feminine in this shoot! We collaborated with fabric, make up, and props to create a carnival shoot. We love playing "dress up" and doing themed photoshoots. Here is the first one.

I freaking LOVE this one. You have to understand that a photographer can only do so much. Jasmine gave me this AMAZING head tilt and attitude. Then, combined with my composition, focus on hair strand, and editing-- we get this... grungy, tough, strong image. Can't wait to share the rest! :)

Day 56: Blue

Saturday, April 3, 2010

There's no rhyme or reason. I just didn't want to leave you hanging. This is from this morning's shoot before the family arrived. The weather was GREATNESS! The family was adorable and the photos came out even sweeter :) Aaaand, the second Mohka Life -- you'll get to see it this coming week!

Day 55: Flower in Your Hair

Friday, April 2, 2010

I love, love, love to put flowers in my hair. I make them too. A simple t-shirt and jeans can be made so feminine with a flower in your hair. I'm also a fan of messy up-dos.

Tomorrow morning I'll be waking up early and doing a baby photoshoot :) Remember the "Art that Helps" project I was working on? I have the collaboration pieces finished by Promise! They are SO amazing!! I am looking for ways to put them in my shop. The plan is to create something sell-able out of the artwork and donate all proceeds to Haiti. I could DEFINITELY see these on a t-shirt OR even a cute apron! I just have to figure out how.

Anyway.. on to the photo!

I really liked this classic feel. I used a texture from Florabella Textures -- love those! Time for sleep... got an early morning in the park :) :)

p.s. for photographers (or anybody) -- would you like me to post the original along with my edited photo? You know, for comparison and stuff. Let me know! I've been considering doing that...

Day 53: More Packing

Wednesday, March 31, 2010

I am in the midst of selling my stuff -- anyone need a new couch? :) The more I think about it, the more I realize that 100 days is pretty impossible with what I have coming up: moving out, visiting AZ for 5 days, leaving Atlanta in 3 weeks, traveling to Houston the following week, and oh yeah -- get married! :)

But in honor of not getting to do one yesterday, I am sharing my state of mind with you:

What to take? Who knew a girl could own so much in one room? :)

Day 51: Upside down

Monday, March 29, 2010

Yikes! So much going on! More and more these are becoming my thoughts and not so much my feminine interpretation, haha. However the origin of this image was absolutely for a feminine interpretation.

I'm wiping lipstick off, going with the theme of "tomboy" and hating things feminine. The model I photographed this past weekend is very beautiful but hates make-up and dressing up. It was quite funny because towards the end of the shoot when we told her to express her "annoyance" with us "dolling" her up, she became more alive than she had been the past 3 hours! I was tempted to share one of her images (a funny one), but opted against it. I really can't wait to share it (another Mohka Life shoot!). Anyway, I captured some incredibly feminine pictures of her, despite her hate of make up and was inspired to express her feelings about being feminine.

But, I'm also feeling discombobulated a little. I'm 2 days away from April, a month where I'll be packing EVERYTHING, selling a majority of it, and driving to Texas to finish planning the wedding. Someone already bought my couch & coffee table! My biggest items aside from my bed. The way things are going, I might have to sell that because it will not be worth the hassle to get it to Phoenix. But I love my bed! And no one really ever buys used beds... no matter how amazing I think mine is. Darn.

Anything got you feeling upside down?

Day 50: Holding & Comfort

Sunday, March 28, 2010

Do you sleep with an extra pillow around your arms? Do you curl against anything -- person or not? I like sleeping that way.. curling against something. I can't say this for all women since I am sure there are some who hate to feel anything around them and even kick the covers off their bed. I personally can sleep on one spot of the bed and wake up on that same spot. I used to be a tosser.

This post is dedicated to the cuddlers. To the women who love/long to be held, who want to feel secure, and who enjoy a simple embrace. To the blanket that we've wrapped around ourselves, over our head, and turned into a body to cry into, scream into, and cling to. Now I can say I am pretty positive men don't do this. Or just don't talk about it... ;)

If no one is around and you need that embrace -- stuff your comforter into your arms and let it comfort you. See -- "comforter" ?? It didn't get it's name for nothing!

Quick thanks to Jasmine for working on me with this shoot and reminding me to NOT push my toes against the wall :)

Day 49: Cooking (again)

Saturday, March 27, 2010

Like I said before, I love cooking and as stereotyped as it is... I feel some kind of fulfillment from it. To be honest, I just love food in general, so recreating a delicious dish is always fun. Jose did all of the hard work, so I won't take credit for that. But someone had to take the pictures, right? ;)

I'll talk about this recipe later. I'm so tired! Had my first bridal shower that was AMAZING. I felt so loved and I'm truly blessed to have the friends that I do. I came home and took pictures of the furniture I'm selling and was packing again. I still have a month, but I hate packing/moving with a passion so I need to ease the stress and start early. I'm already overwhelmed! Looking at this again puts me slightly at ease... MMmmm...

Delicious! I share the details later ;)
